Smiling Bull Moose
Posted by BoulderCountyPhotographer
I had the pleasure of chasing moose all day long and chasing stars all night long at Brainard lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Roosevelt National Forest, Boulder County, Colorado. It was a great sight to see this bull moose throw me a smile to make my day! I slept for two days after this photo trip.
Moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family. On average, an adult moose stands between five and seven feet high at the shoulder. Large males can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds while females are roughly three-quarters of this size. Both sexes have chocolate-brown fur, a humped shoulder, a bulbous nose and a ball of skin, called a “bell,” that hangs from their neck.
The long legs of moose allow them to travel through deep snow and even swim in deep water. They also use their legs to kick predators or maneuver over obstacles on the ground.
Males, called bulls, grow large palmate antlers which can reach five feet across and weigh up to 77 pounds. Bulls use antlers during the fall mating season to spar or fight with other males as they compete for mates. Females, called cows, do not have antlers, but they select a bull based on his antler size.
After the mating season, bulls begin dropping their antlers in the late fall to conserve energy for the winter. The antlers begin to grow again in early spring. They take three to five months to fully develop and are covered with velvety skin during this time. The size and growth of antlers depends on diet and age. Symmetrical antlers reflect the general health of the bull. Antlers typically grow back larger each year. (source NPS.gov)

About BoulderCountyPhotographer
James "Bo" Insogna was Born and raised in Pittsburgh PA. He studied with the New York Institute of Photography. He Started his photography career 1984. He opened a studio in Boulder, Colorado downtown on the Boulder mall. Shooting for local newspapers, magazines, Skiing, Bicycling, models portfolios and some commercial work. In 1987 the economy got bad in Boulder so he decided to make a move to Scottsdale Arizona. Once in Arizona, He became a staff photographer for the Phoenician Arabian Horse Magazine doing the covers, inside lay outs and a two page spread called Bo Trek. In the late 1980's - 1990's he was a respected member of the Arabian Horse Community in Arizona, chosen to photograph champions, riders, trainers and owners. From the first Arizona lightning monsoon season, Bo very quickly became a Lightning Storm Chaser. Striking-Photography.com, www.ArizonaLightning.com and aka www.TheLightningMan.com was born. A very fun, exciting and dangerous job! Since 1987 he has spent many years pursuing elusive lightning storms spanning miles of natural desert. It takes great dedication, courage and desire to grip a metal camera upon a metal tripod astride mountain peaks with lightning crashing mere paces away. His prints reflect the courage and passion he feels for his art. He has been featured on television and in print. In 1991 The VVA honored him by choosing his Photograph "Operation Desert Storm" as the official print of the Arizona Desert Storm Memorial Fund. The men and the flag represent the "Operation" and the Victory and Liberation of Kuwait. The Saguaro represents the "Desert" and the men and women who served in the Gulf. The Lightning represents the "Storm" and the Air War with swift, precise strikes. Twenty years after leaving Boulder, Bo decided to relocate his family back in Colorado. He settled in Boulder County. What fun. I grew up in northern Minnesota where, at the time, there was a healthy moose population. I understand it has been diminishing. I always loved coming across a moose – if they weren’t in rut.
Thanks! We never had moose here. Then then introduced them about 20 years ago and now they are every where. Boulder had a Northern Exposure Moment when one was hanging out on the Boulder Downtown Mall.! Crazy! Enjoy the night
