Just Another Sonoran Sunrise

 

I have said it before and I’ll say it again…. the Arizona desert goes really really well with Colorado.  Spring training with the Rockies and for a place close by to beat the cold and snow.  Not that Colorado winters are that bad. Especially if you like to play in the snow.   Here is a view of my old stomping grounds east of Scottsdale.  Out towards Saguaro Lake and Four Peaks. Scenic lush Arizona Sonoran desert view of giant saguaro cactus and the colors in the sky of another beautiful sunrise.  Took this on the way out on our Arizona Thanksgiving road trip.  Till we meet again!

Lightning At Sunset With Star Trails Above

 

Fantastic lightning show all across the eastern horizon.   This is a view from Jackson Lake in Morgan County Colorado looking East.  These thunderstorm cells  went around us giving us a great side view and show as they went out in the NE direction right past our location.  Lightning kicked up right after sunset and went on into the night.  There was a day a way full moon to the right out of frame and stars shinning bright above.  This is a stack image to get the star trails equal to almost a 3 minute exposure.

Canyonlands Utah Sunrise

 

This was one of the last stops on our road trip from Colorado to Arizona and back again through Utah.  We ended here at night and woke up to this beautiful scenic landscape.

Canyonlands National Park is  located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab. It preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. Legislation creating the park was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on September 12, 1964

The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character. Two large river canyons are carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River and Green River.

Weird fact: Nineteenth century cowboys corralled wild horses onto today’s Dead Horse Point State Park. Supposedly, one herd left on the point died of thirst.

Scientific fact: Cataract Canyon may be one of the world’s most actively filling canyons. Scientists discovered 260 feet of sediment below the water’s surface.

Waking up In Bryce Canyon Utah vBlog Video

After leaving Scottsdale Arizona on my road trip, I headed to Bryce Canyon National Park.  What a great drive it was. Nothing like waking up and catching a beautiful sunrise after a great night of astrophotography.

Really wanted to get a hoodoos with the sky, after getting there in the pitch black new moon night, it was hard to find a great location.  So I settled for some cool trees instead of falling off a cliff 🙂

Great Sand Dunes National Park And Preserve Panorama

This is a very large eighteen image panorama view of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.  Scenic landscape of the plains meeting the dunes and the snow covered springtime Colorado Rocky Mountains.   Park elevations range from 7,515 feet to 13,604 feet above sea level. In the summer, the sand surface can reach 150°F

There are several streams flowing on the perimeter of the dunes. The streams erode the edge of the dune field, and sand is carried downstream. The water disappears into the ground, depositing sand on the surface. Winds pick up the deposits of sand, and blow them up onto the dune field once again.

Digging a couple inches into the dunes even at their peaks reveals wet sand. Part of the motivation of turning the Monument into a National Park was the extra protection of the water, which Colorado’s cities and agriculture covet.
