Smiling Bull Moose

Smiling Bull Moose Art Print

I had the pleasure of chasing moose all day long and chasing stars all night long  at Brainard lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Roosevelt National Forest, Boulder County, Colorado.  It was a great sight to see this bull moose throw me a smile to make my day!  I slept for two days after this photo trip.

Moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family. On average, an adult moose stands between five and seven feet high at the shoulder. Large males can weigh as much as 1,500 pounds while females are roughly three-quarters of this size. Both sexes have chocolate-brown fur, a humped shoulder, a bulbous nose and a ball of skin, called a “bell,” that hangs from their neck.

The long legs of moose allow them to travel through deep snow and even swim in deep water. They also use their legs to kick predators or maneuver over obstacles on the ground.

Males, called bulls, grow large palmate antlers which can reach five feet across and weigh up to 77 pounds. Bulls use antlers during the fall mating season to spar or fight with other males as they compete for mates. Females, called cows, do not have antlers, but they select a bull based on his antler size.

After the mating season, bulls begin dropping their antlers in the late fall to conserve energy for the winter. The antlers begin to grow again in early spring. They take three to five months to fully develop and are covered with velvety skin during this time. The size and growth of antlers depends on diet and age. Symmetrical antlers reflect the general health of the bull. Antlers typically grow back larger each year.  (source NPS.gov)

Deer On The Plains Great Colorado Sand Dunes

Deer on the Plains Great Colorado Sand Dunes

A heard of deer grazing on the springtime plains of the Colorado Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

Wildlife of the park and preserve includes pikas, bighorn sheep, black bears, mountain lions, beavers, badgers, bison, pronghorn, birds such as ptarmigan, peregrine falcons, owls, eagles, and herons, and reptiles such as lizards and snakes. Fish encountered in the park’s streams include the Rio Grande cutthroat trout and suckers. Insects such as beetles are common as well.

The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising about 750 feet (230 m) from the floor of the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range, covering about 19,000 acres (7,700 ha). Researchers say that the dunes started forming less than 440,000 years ago.

The dunes were formed from sand and soil deposits of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, flowing through the San Luis Valley. Over the ages, glaciers feeding the river and the vast lake that existed upon the valley melted, and the waters evaporated. Westerly winds picked up sand particles from the lake and river flood plain. As the wind lost power before crossing the Sangre de Cristo Range, the sand was deposited on the east edge of the valley. This process continues, and the dunes are slowly growing. The wind changes the shape of the dunes daily.  Source: wiki

American Buffalo

American Buffalo Art Print

American Buffalo, with a textured USA American Flag background.  The American bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American buffalo, is a North American species of bison that once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, became nearly extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle, and has made a recent resurgence largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves.

American bison live in river valleys, and on prairies and plains. Typical habitat is open or semi-open grasslands, as well as sagebrush, semi-arid lands and scrub-lands. Some lightly wooded areas are also known historically to have supported bison. Bison will also graze in hilly or mountainous areas where the slopes are not steep.
