Follow the Leader

Follow the leader. Canada Geese follow a leader and take turns leading. The goose in the front of the V formation has the hardest job, they are breaking the flow of air and everyone else is benefiting. The leader is also guiding the direction of the flock. When the one at the front needs a break, he/she goes to the back of the line and another moves to the front and leads the way. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of him, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. In this way, the geese can fly for a long time before they must stop for rest.  ( Prints available online –  Follow the Leader)

At least 11 subspecies of Canada Goose have been recognized, although only a couple are distinctive. In general, the geese get smaller as you move northward, and darker as you go westward. The four smallest forms are now considered a different species: the Cackling Goose.  The oldest known wild Canada Goose was 30 years 4 months old.
