Colorado Anvil Lightning Crawler

Colorado Anvil Lightning Crawler

Out chasing storms in northeast Colorado and saw some amazing crawlers that looked like they were coming off of a tower going up into the sky. During the dissipation of a severe thunderstorm, many discharges of lightning that never appear to make it to the ground will appear to cling to the base of a cloud. Looking up at the cloud base, an anvil crawler will look like fingers of lightning underneath the clouds.

Corner Of A Storm

Corner Of A Storm Art Print

While out chasing lightning storms, we get to see a lot of rainbows.  As I was shooting a rainbow view to the eastern Colorado horizon,  this was the view behind me looking west to the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

These storms come in quick over the Rocky mountains and head out east and cause all kinds of trouble.  The sun was shinning through on the top of this cloud making for a cool corner of a thunderstorm.

Lightning Striking Longs Peak Foothills 4C Art Print

Lightning Striking Longs Peak Foothills 4

Lightning bolts, cloud to ground striking the front range foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains in north Boulder County.  A view of the Twin Peaks, Mount Meeker 13,911 ft. and Longs Peak 14,256 ft. in the distance.

This storm came in fast about 8:30 pm, one thing I have learned about Colorado Lightning storms in the springtime… they come in fast, leave the same way and do not last long.  For me as soon as I saw some flashed in the sky, out the door and landed where I could to get a composition view of Longs Peak. As I was set up shooting a farmer showed up to deliver 8 boxes of live bees, he told me hopefully it will all go well. Lucky for me it did.

The Lightning was all over in less than twenty minutes.  It moved north but died out.  Looking forward to the warmer weather when the lightning in the storm last a little longer.  There are 8 Lightning images in the series. This is number four. Here are my settings for this Lightning session. ISO 100 – 20sec – f5.6 – 28mm.

We Have Front Row Seats for the Thunderstorm

Front Row Seat for the Storm

It is almost like these trees have a front row seat watching this storm as lightning strikes and dances in front of them during this beautiful Colorado thunderstorm on the country plains. A very active night that got me out of bed and out the door to this location.  It is so nice when a plan comes together, as from my bedroom window I could see it hitting up in this area.

So off I went and when I got here, the set up was two cameras,  one shooting in this direction Northeast and the other 100 feet apart shooting Southwest towards a barn and silo.  Really got my exercise on this as I would have to run back and forth between the two cameras hitting the shutters.  When one was done the other would go.  Had 30 seconds exposures to do this.  Finally the lightning in the Northeast stopped and I got both cameras together to the barn, one shooting wide angle and the other closer in.  This is in Southwest Weld County, Colorado.

Thunderstorm on the Colorado Plains Panorama

Thunderstorm on the Colorado Plains Panorama

Lightning thunderstorm with cloud to ground lightning striking out on the plains of North Boulder County, Colorado.   Mother Nature putting on a great show, this is better than fireworks any day.

Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are very common, about 100 strike the Earth’s surface every single second—and their power is extraordinary. Each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity.  YIKES!
